World War II Marine Corps Gen. Alexander Vandegrift was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Guadalcanal campaign in the South Pacific which led to a critical U.S. victory.

Basilone, who served in the Marine Corps, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions on Oct. 24 and 25, 1942, at the Battle of Guadalcanal.
